Alpha Kappa Alpha member and Mom Graduate from Wayne State University

Wayne State University held their spring commencement ceremony Monday, May 7. Parents congratulated their sons and daughters as they triumphantly strolled across the stage to receive a diploma it took years of hard work to obtain.

But during the ceremony, a parent shared the spotlight with her daughter as she, too, walked across the stage to receive her diploma.

Sherry Kahari, 39, and her daughter Darcia Miller, 21, graduated together from WSU, the Detroit Free Press reports. Kahari reportedly earned her master’s degree, while her daughter earned her bachelor’s degree. The twosome both earned their degrees in Social Work.

But the pair would like to take their degrees into separate fields. Kahari aims to work in a hospital, while her daughter hopes to work in a nonprofit organization assisting victims of violence and sexual assault, the Detroit Free Press reports.

“I’m excited,” Miller told The Detroit Free Press. “I think I’m more excited for her than for me. She’s done a great job of giving me advice in life and helping me out. She’s been through so much. It’s going to be a very exciting moment.”
