Chicago Man Charged In Shooting Death Of 16-Year-Old Simeon Athlete Michael Flournoy

A Chicago man has been charged in the shooting death of 16-year-old Simeon High School student Michael Flournoy.

Kenneth K. Jackson, 31, was charged with first-degree murder, murder and mob action, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Flournoy was gunned down in the 1000 block of East 93rd Street outside of St. Anthony’s Church, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Flournoy was on his way to pick up a bag of chips from the store when he was “jumped” by a group of boys and then shot in the face, the boy’s grandfather Samuel Woods told the Sun-Times.

Police say Flournoy was murdered following a dispute with a man over a girl, CBS Chicago reports.

Jackson allegedly became enraged by something Flournoy said to his daughter, according to DNAinfo. Jackson left and returned with two accomplices who jumped the teen before shooting him in the head.

Jackson allegedly admitted to the crime.

Flournoy was a budding student athlete participating in Simeon’s football and wrestling programs.

“He was just a conscientious kid, had a good spirit, and at the same time was really focused on his grades and just wanted to do what he could, whether it was in a classroom or on the wrestling mat, to pick up extra work to improve and get better,” Simeon wrestling coach Carnell Jones told ABC 7.

Woods told the Sun-Times Flournoy dreamed of becoming an architect.

Friends, family and Simeon classmates held a vigil outside St. Anthony’s Church in honor of Flournoy. Vigil Attendees left stuffed animals, messages and a wrestling headgear.

Flournoy’s mother Tymeka Woods is mourning her son’s loss.

“I couldn’t even be by his side when he needed me most. I just feel like this time I dropped the ball,” she told NBC Chicago through tears. “These young kids today don’t have a care about taking a life. My son did not deserve to be shot in the middle of the street like a dog.”
