Chicago Teen Rico Recklezz Brings Gun To School For Protection

It is a dire situation when one doesn’t feel safe in neither their school nor own neighborhood.

Gun violence has plagued the city of Chicago. Many residents have renamed the Windy City “Chiraq” for its high rate of violence. Chicago, according to statistics, has a higher homicide rate than Kabul, Afghanistan.

In 2012 alone, the city recorded 506 murders.

The beginning of 2013 didn’t show any slowdown in pace. Chicago saw its deadliest January since 2002 with 45 homicides reported, according to CBS.

NBC Chicago estimated the Windy City is on pace to reach 730 homicides this year.

With the high rate of gun violence plaguing the city and no faith in the Chicago Police Department, many urban youths have taken matters into their own hands by securing their own form of protection.

Chicago teen rapper Rico Recklezz appeared in a video brandishing a handgun in school.

“You can catch me in school getting my motherf*cking education,” he said in the video. “Chilling in school, still drilling.

“In school still drilling. In school, big canons on deck. In school, never gave a f*ck about the rules. I’d drill on these teachers on my momma.”

Chicago rapper CashOut, a reputed member of the Gangster Disciples street gang, revealed in an interview he knows young people “who really out there, who really gotta go from A to B with a gun everyday.”

The majority of violence, CashOut said, comes from the Englewood area where he resides.

CashOut explained many gangs feel they have “something to prove,” which results in a “domino effect.”

“If somebody brother get killed, then somebody cousin gotta get killed,” he said. “If we catch him over here, he know he a target. If he off this block, then we gotta go ahead and get him. Like they gotta make a statement.”

Chicago rapper P. Rico coined the phrase “no lackin.” “No Lackin” is a rule many youths in the streets of Chicago have come to live by. It means to not be caught without a weapon.

But others who are not in the streets have lost their lives for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed Tuesday when a gunman opened fire on a group of friends she was hanging with after school. She was 15.

Pendleton, a sophomore at King College Prep High School, traveled to Washington to perform with her school’s band at President Obama’s inauguration.

Much dialogue is needed to bring an end to the violence gripping the city of Chicago. Many are calling on President Obama to address the city’s murder rate, specifically in the black and Latino communities.

Aisha Truss-Miller and the Black Youth Project have created a petition on change.org to request the President to come to Chicago to speak.

Miller lost a very close family member to gun violence. Miller’s cousin Leonard Truss was shot and killed by an AR-15 in front of his home just before his 18th birthday, according to Miller’s post on change.org.

Miller said Obama’s speech on Chicago gun violence “must be a substantive one, that includes specifics on the policies and programs his administration will initiate to save the lives and improve the futures of our young people.”

“We know that President Obama cannot solve the issue of gun violence alone,” she said. “However, he can call the nation to consciousness about the need for a response to this specific crisis that is affecting youth in cities like mine.

“President Obama rightly went to Newtown to comfort the families who lost children in that horrific tragedy, and now it is time he come home to Chicago and comfort the over 500 families who have lost loved ones to gun violence in the past year.”
