Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence after 41 people were shot this past weekend, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The eleven fatalities amongst shooting victims marked 500 homicides for the city.

In 2016, the City reached 500 murders during Labor Day Weekend, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. There were 534 homicides recorded through Sept. 18, 2016. This represents a seven percent drop in homicides from this time last year.

Chicago finished 2016 with 762 homicides.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel deployed 100 new officers throughout the city to combat crime, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The initiative is part of a two-year plan to add 1,000 more officers to the department.
