CNN Contributor LZ Granderson Draws Harsh Criticism After Comparing Ferguson Black Looters In Mike Brown Protest To The KKK

CNN contributor LZ Granderson wrote a controversial editorial piece in response to the shooting death of college bound Ferguson resident Mike Brown.

Granderson wrote in his piece he is tired of bad apples in the police force unjustly taking the lives of African American citizens they are supposed to serve and protect.

But many in the African American community found a particular line in Granderson’s piece disturbing. Ferguson compared African American protestors who partook in looting during Sunday’s demonstration to the Klu Klux Klan, a historically racist, terrorist organization.

“I hate black looters at peaceful rallies the way I hate the KKK,” he wrote.

The KKK has long terrorized the African American community since the conclusion of American Slavery. The violent group was responsible for the burning and lynching of thousands of African Americans.

Granderson’s sentiment toward the looters drew much criticism:

Granderson was partially correct in comparing looting to the KKK. The Klan was notorious for looting and destroying black communities in the early 1900s.

Members of the Klan were involved in obliterating Black Wall Street, a thriving African American community in Greenwood, Tulsa, OK in the early 1920s. The community was home to successful black professionals, including attorneys, realtors, doctors, shop owners and bankers.”

Ebony Magazine reports black entrepreneurs built an “impressive business center that included banks, hotels, cafes, clothiers and movie theaters.

Good times for this community didn’t last long as envious Whites in a neighboring area sparked a riot May 31 to June 1, 1921, claiming the lives of more than 300 African Americans and displacing about 9,000, according to Zinned Project.

Whites looted and burned to the ground 40 square blocks of 1, 265 African American homes, hospitals, schools and churches. There were 150 businesses destroyed over that span of two days.

The looting of QuikTrip pales in comparison to the destruction of Black Wall Street. Granderson says he is tired of the police victimizing African Americans. But Granderson, sadly, hasn’t even woken up yet.
