Common On Mentoring Chief Keef and Lil Reese: ‘Sometimes, They Just Need To Be Heard’

Common says it’s important to listen rather than talk when serving as a mentor to someone. This is the role the “Nobody’s Smiling” artist serves to his younger Chi Town-bred protégés.

Common has collaborated with some of the Chi’s up and coming talents that are barely out of their teens, including Lil Herb and Dreezy.

Common hasn’t had the opportunity to speak with Chief Keef, but has spoken with Young Chop and Lil Reese.

Common sat down with Sway of MTV’s Rap Fix to discuss providing mentorship to Chi Town’s new burgeoning crop of talent.

“I haven’t talked to Chief Keef, specifically,” he said. “I been around Chop a little bit. One time I got on the phone with Lil Reese. We was talking about music. One thing I my best to do is not get preachy with them dudes. Sometimes they just need to be heard.

“Point blank, if I’m talking to Dreezy or if I’m talking to Herb… I just relate em how I relate to em,” he continued. “As a human being, seeing what’s going on in life. And I’ll listen to them cause I got things to learn from them, too. …I offer an open line to listen than just talk.”
