Jarell Brooks is receiving national recognition for his selfless actions in saving a young mother and her two children during a Colorado theater shooting massacre that left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

Brooks’ actions caught the attention of former NBA player and Isaiah Rider and wife Vanessa. The couple started a campaign to assist the 19-year-old hero with hospital bills and college tuition.

Vanessa Ryder wrote on the campaign’s website she and her husband “would like to give a true American Hero glory.”

“In a life or death situation, Jarell Brooks saw the abandoned mother alone with her 2 kids and got them to safety, even took a bullet to his thigh,” she wrote.

Jarell, she wrote, will have to take time off of work to recover from his wound.

“Me and my husband thought to donate to him,” she wrote. “He should be recognized as a TRUE HERO.”

Vanessa wrote, “It’s what you do when no one is looking, when the cameras are off that defines the REAL soul of a man.”
