Girlfriend Says Chavis Carter Had a Gun

Chavis Carter, a 21-year-old man found shot in the head while handcuffed, allegedly made two phone calls to his girlfriend while in the back of a police cruiser, CNN reports.

Carter reportedly told his girlfriend he was scared and had a gun. A lead investigator interviewed his girlfriend Wednesday, Jonesboro police said, according to CNN.

Police think Carter may have hid the gun while he was placed in the car the first time. After hearing a “thump” sound, police got out of their vehicle to discover to Carter’s body slumped over and .380-caliber Cobra semi-automatic pistol.

Despite an Arkansas state crime lab’s ruling of suicide, Carter’s family and attorney still have more questions.

Carter’s mother Theresa Carter believes her son was murdered.

“I think they killed him,” Theresa Carter said, according to an August 15 interview with CNN. “I mean, my son wasn’t suicidal.”

Another question posed by an attorney for the family was the lack of a gun residue test performed by people at the scene.

“Anyone searching for the truth would have performed those tests on Chavis and the arresting officers,” Benjamin Irwin, an attorney for the Cochran Law Firm, said in a written statement, according to CNN.

Police plan to release more information surrounding Carter’s death as many news outlets have submitted Freedom of Information requests.
