King Samson Addresses Chicago Gun Violence in ‘ChiRaq Streets’ Official Music Video

Chicago artist King Samson is using his lyricism to address a grave situation in his hometown.

King Samson released ‘ChiRaq Streets’ music video, which takes aim at the murder rate that’s gripping the city of Chicago.

Samson featured news stories tackling the topic in his music video to better convey his message.

Samson took a different approach to address the violence in his hometown rather than the usual “Stop the Violence” theme. Samson went to the root and told his story.

In ‘ChiRaq Streets, he raps, “Dropped out of school, went the wrong way/Posted up in them gang ways/Been stop thinking about As and Bs/I was tryna buy me an AK/Been stop thinking bout report cards, I was just tryna get more hard.

Gun violence has plagued the city of Chicago for many years. Many residents have renamed the Windy City “Chiraq” for its high rate of violence. Chicago, according to statistics, has a higher homicide rate than Kabul, Afghanistan.

In 2012 alone, the city recorded 506 murders.

The beginning of 2013 didn’t show any slowdown in pace. Chicago saw its deadliest January since 2002 with 45 homicides reported, according to CBS.

NBC Chicago estimated the Windy City is on pace to reach 730 homicides this year.

In Chicago, the homicide rate is disproportionately higher amongst its minority residents. There have been 2,045 homicides since Jan. 1, 2007 amongst the African American demographic, according to Red Eye Chicago. There were 647 homicides amongst Caucasians since 2007.

Chicago rapper King Samson sat down with TJ Holmes for a special segment on Chicago’s growing gang problem.

A broken family background prompted Samson, 24, to seek love elsewhere in the streets.

“You know my momma was on drugs and when I was growing up I knew this really wasn’t my family,” Samson said. “I was going out doing what I was doing. The streets was more my family than my family people I was living with.”

Samson, who has been rapping for only nine months, said he is “making a way through rap” to get away from the gritty Chicago street life.

“I have a gift at rapping,” he said. I know how to put words together because I had been through stuff.”

Before he was rapping, Samson revealed he earned his main source of income through “robbing.” Samson said he “wouldn’t hesitate” to go back to robbing if music didn’t work out.

Samson said he has used his gun before, but didn’t “stay around” to find out if he murdered anyone.

Life is so cut throat in the inner city of Chicago that it would be miracle to make it to see age 40, according to the rapper.

“I don’t condone violence or ignorance unless it’s brought to me. I’m not going out and riding in the car like ‘let’s go do something to somebody,’” he said. “But if it’s brought past my way and I gotta protect me, myself or my family or somebody who with me, then I can’t care.”
