Nine Murdered in Chicago Over Weekend

Nine people were murdered this past weekend in Chicago, according to DNAinfo.com

Seven city residents were killed on Saturday alone. Additionally, seven of the homicide victims were the result of gun violence.

The murders during the weekend are the deadliest to strike city this year.

The murders bring the city’s 2013 death toll to 40.

In 2012 alone, there were 506 murders. In 2013, there have already been 18 homicides thus far.

The Windy City is on pace to reach 730 homicides this year, according to NBC Chicago.

The city has earned the name “ChIraq” amongst its urban youths. Chicago, according to statistics, has a higher homicide rate than Kabul, Afghanistan.

Rapper Shyne is calling for President Obama to issue a state of emergency in Chicago.

“Dear ‪@BarackObama there has to be something the former US senator from Chicago can do for his former constituents! The genocide must stop

“Dear ‪@BarackObama u must declare a state of emergency in Chicago! One of those bodies could’ve been you as a teenager! U now have the power,” he wrote.

In Chicago, the homicide rate is disproportionately higher amongst its minority residents. There have been 2,045 homicides since Jan. 1, 2007 amongst the African American demographic, according to Red Eye Chicago. There were 647 homicides amongst Caucasians since 2007.

“At least 18 murdered in Chicago within the first 10 days of the year — RT ‪http://rt.com/usa/news/18-chicago-year-murder-812/ … ‪@barackobama do something now!” Shyne wrote.

Shyne may also want the Hip Hop community to rally behind the cause. In addition to Obama, Shyne called for Jay-Z to get involved.

“Dear ‪@BarackObama call Jay-z to fly his private plane Down to Chicago & u fly yours the same way u called in the stars to win Ohio ‪#help”

Chicago, he said, needs education and hope.

Shyne believes Obama, who has close ties to Chicago as a former Senator, should have a strong passion to fix the social inequalities gripping the city.

“My comrades in Chiraq need opportunity! They need education & hope! ‪@barackobama declare a war on poverty! Declare a war on lackof education

“Dear ‪@barackobama u were the US senator from Chicago! This is your responsibility! Don’t turn your back on the people who made u!,” he wrote.

It was only weeks ago when the city of Newton, Ct experienced a grave tragedy with the mass killing of 20 school children and six adults.

President Obama held a press conference and called for gun reform for assault weapons.

Shyne is advocating a ban on handguns also.

“Critic: piers wants to ban assault weapons but keep the hand guns that kill way more people! What about Chicago?

“Countdown to new wave in gun violence battle: ban the hand guns destroying our communities in Chicago & thru out the US,” he wrote.

During the Sandy Hook press conference, Obama showed American citizens another side as he became emotional during the conference.

But Shyne is asking where are the President’s tears for the black and Latino babies dying daily in the Windy city.

“Urban homicides often target the young ‪@BarackObama where is the outrage & heart break at the young lives being lost!” he wrote.

Civil Rights Leader Jesse Jackson also took to Twitter to call for the President to tackle the “complex” issue gripping the city of Chicago.

“I’m so glad the president spoke out about Newtown. But Chicago is much more complex. 175 under 18 killed this year as of last night in Chi,” he wrote.

“Ignorance, hopelessness and guns are all factors in this war in Chicago. But we don’t make it sell guns in Chicago,” he wrote.

Lupe Fiasco appeared on MTV’s RapFix Live and became emotional after host Sway Calloway showed 6-year-old footage of the Chicago rapper in an episode of “My Block.”

Following the conclusion of the footage, a choked-up Lupe Fiasco was lost for words. After some time to collect himself, Fiasco told Sway that “some of the dudes” in the video were “dead.”

“Chicago the murder capital,” the rapper said. “The dudes in that video in a prison, a couple fed cases, then there’s ‘ghosts.’”

There’s people that ain’t there, he added.

Lupe said the issue is “not just Chicago.”

The rapper, born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, said the black homicide and incarceration rate is an issue “everywhere.”

“I see it in New Orleans,” he said.

African Americans are being incarcerated and murdered at alarming rates in urban communities around the country.

Though Lupe was able to make it out of his old Madison Terrace neighborhood on Chicago’s gritty West Side, he revealed many of the youths from his community would suffer a sad fate.

Some of those kids, he said, are not going to make it out of there.

Derrick Rose, a native of the notorious Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, became very emotional when discussing the violence in his hometown during the Sept. 13 unveiling of his Adidas Rose 3 shoe.

“It’s truly a blessing. With all this stuff that’s going on in this city, a kid from Englewood got something positive going on. That makes me feel so good man,” Rose said. “The shoe is great, all this is great, but I can’t explain this. I can’t.

“To have true fans that means a lot to me and I know it means a lot to my family because we aren’t supposed to be here at all, but God made the way and this is just truly unreal and I’m just happy that I have true fans out there.”
