Stephen A. Smith on Tim Tebow: He Only Started for the Denver Broncos Because He’s a ‘Christian’

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith made an appearance at Florida International University and offered his thoughts on popular NFL Quarterback Tim Tebow. Smith called Tebow “horrible” and took issue with the Christian athletes throwing ability.

“Tim Tebow is a great kid,” Smith said. Tim Tebow is impossible to root against. Tim Tebow is an incredibly nice guy. And he is a God-fearing man. I do think he is sincere about his faith. I just don’t think that has a single, solitary thing to do with his ability to throw the football. I don’t believe he can throw. I think he’s horrible.”

But Smith doesn’t have a problem with Tebow. He has a problem with “Tebow Mania.” Smith doesn’t like the support Tebow is getting from groups due to his Christian values.

Religious individuals, he said, want Tebow so desperately to succeed because he personifies what they want professional athletes to be viewed like.

“As a result, because he is a God-fearing, Christian young man that preaches about celibacy, and being a mercenary on behalf of his good Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” he said. “He feels very passionate about this. And his supporters feel very passionate about it. They push and they prod to have him front and center because it highlights what they want to represent the professional athlete.”

“I have no problems with those people,” he said. “There are far worse things to do than to praise the Lord. I have no problem with it, but just don’t tell me there isn’t a problem when that boy throws the football. This is so profound and so deep to me because, as a black man, I know for a fact that many concessions weren’t made for anybody else coming into the NFL.”

Tebow, he said, according to his number one fan Skip Bayless was fourth string.

“How did he get first?” Smith asked. “I know that Kyle Orton stunk and that he was 1-4. What about the other two quarterbacks he jumped over. Where were they?”

Concessions, he said, were made because you had religious zealots out there that were pushing him front and center and forced the face of the Denver Broncos John Elway to put that boy in the starting lineup.

“They were bullying John Elway because of a man that throws like he a shortstop instead of a quarterback,” he said.
