Three FAMU Band Members Face Hazing Charges for Beating

Florida A&M band member Bria Shante Hunter was beaten in a suspected hazing ritual that left her with a broken thigh, according to the Associated Press.  The beatings, authorities said, took place on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

She was physically attacked with fists and a metal ruler, so she may be iniated into the “Red Dawg Order,” a band gang for students from Georgia.

On Monday, Sean Hobson, 23, and Aaron Golson, 19, were charged with hazing and battery, and James Harris, 22, was charged with hazing.

Hunter’s beating, along with the death of Robert Champion, shed light on a dark history of hazing at the university. Ivery Luckey, a former clarinet player, was hospitalized after he was paddled 300 times in 1998. In 2001, band member Marcus Parker suffered kidney damage due to paddling.

Hunter was asked in an interview with Orlando station WFTV-TV why band members take part in hazing. She responded, “So we can be accepted. If you don’t do anything, then, it’s like you’re lame.”
