Spike Lee has faced much backlash over his controversial film “Chi-Raq.” But it’s going to take more than that to keep him from moving forward with his film.
Spike took to IG to post his “No Peace, No Piece” artwork for his film.
He wrote in his caption, “Like It Or Not WE COMIN OUT-December 4th NATIONWIDE YA-DIG? SHO-NUFF. DA TRUTH HURTS.”
Spike Lee sat down with ABC7Chicago to shoot down any misconceptions critics has about his film and explain his motive for filming “Chi-Raq.”
“We’re trying to shed light on what’s going on,” he said.
Spike was under fire for adding humor to his film, which can be seen in the first trailer released for the project.
“People need to understand what the word satire is,” he said. “This is not a comedy.”
Spike cited support for his film from “Purpose Over Pain,” an activist group for mothers who lost loved ones to gun violence.

“These are people who lost their children to senseless violence. There’s no game,” he said. “Why would they attach themselves to a film or not trust me. …For me, that’s validation. ”
Spike also defended his choice to film in Chicago.
“We deal with truth, it doesn’t matter where the person comes from,” he said.
“We tried to do this film six years, but that time, we couldn’t get financing for it,” he continued. “Like a year ago, I said let’s do it again and let’s make it take place in Chicago- Chiraq.”
Spike hopes to raise awareness on a myriad of topics with this project.
“One of the things this film addresses is guns,” he said. “Chicago has one of the toughest gun laws, but people just get in the car and drive to Indiana with a fake ID, he said before calling for new legislation.
“…We have to do something because whatever they’re trying isn’t working,” he said. “I’m not here to say whose fault it is. We all have to come together- black, white brown, whatever- and try to stop this.
Spike also made a point to mention this problem is not just in Chicago and that gun violence is an issue in Bronx, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Washington D.C.
But Chicago, according to Spike, is like the “canary in the coal mine.”
