In an interview with NPR, First Lady Michelle Obama called the death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old boy gunned down by a neighborhood watchman, a “tragedy.”
Obama told NPR her “heart goes out to the parents, because we all as parents understand the tragedy of that kind of loss.”
The first lady’s comments come weeks after President Obama spoke for the first time on the case. The world watched as the President said “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”
Martin was walking to his father’s fiancé’s home after picking up Skittles and an Arizona when neighborhood watchmen George Zimmerman, 28, confronted the teen who he deemed “suspicious.”
The first lady said America is a “wonderful place to live,” but it also very “diverse” and “complicated.”
“Because it so diverse, our challenges are complex,” she told NPR. “So there isn’t, you know, a one-shot solution to this. It is complicated. It takes time. It takes openness. It takes compassion. It takes patience. And it takes a lot of work.”
