The streets of Chicago was again flooded with the blood of its residents after City saw 69 people shot over Memorial Day Weekend, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Six people were fatally shot, including a 15-year-old girl, according to Chicago Sun Times. Sun Times reports the total number of people shot during Memorial Day weekend this year surpassed the 2015 holiday, when 55 people were shot, 12 fatally.
Nearly half of this weekend’s shootings occurred in the Harrison District on the City’s West Side.
These homicides occurred despite Chicago Police beefing up patrols, according to NBC 5 Chicago. Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the violence “unacceptable.”
First Deputy Superintendent John Escalente reportedly announced plans to increase patrols in specific high-crime areas, including along Lake Shore Drive.
“As we’ve said before, it’s about 1,500 people that are driving the violence,” Escalente said. “Those are the people we’re trying to concentrate on.”
