The Black Student Union at Bowling Green State University held their annual fashion show on Saturday, Dec. 3 in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Incorporating an exotic theme, the title of this year’s show was “The Fierce Nature Fashion Show: Only the Strong Survive.”
Hosted by University students Jasmine Cogdell and Rachel Willingham, Saturday’s event attracted an audience of well over 200 spectators. Ms. Cogdell, a sophomore studying Early Childhood, said it was her first time hosting a live event.
“I was a fish out of the water,” the 20-year-old said. “It was a different experience, but I enjoyed it.”
The models showcased a unique brand of clothing and style in several scenes, including “Rainforest,” “Sands of Time,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Under the Sea” and “The Cold.” The show also included performances by student rapper “J-Bell” and the Africana Dance Troup.
Model Jessica Bennett, a 21-year-old studying both Marketing Education and Business Education at the university, was more than pleased to take part in Saturday’s show.
“I do multiple fashion shows around campus and I was approached and said yes,” said Ms. Bennett, adding the show was “very creative and original.”
Annie Hernandez, BSU public relations chair, coordinated the event and was very involved “behind the scenes.”
A lot of work, she said, went into the show.
Kevin Fletcher, who goes under the moniker DJ KevKoopa, provided the musical selection for the evening. He said he chose music to “keep it classy” and “give it that fashion show feel.”
BSU President LaQuinda Butler, a 20-year-old junior studying Business Administration, called the show “one of our signature events.”
The event, she said, is held annually on the first Saturday in December and money earned is used to pay for the Jackson-Tolliver scholarship.
Ms. Hernandez added, “We made enough for two scholarships.”
Ms. Butler said the show turned out well and she was pleased with the turnout.
“We put on a show that is actually worth seeing,” she said.
