Chicago police are warning Uber passengers to be more careful of fake drivers. This warning message comes after Uber passengers were robbed in two separate incidents this month, Fox 32 Chicago reports.
Police say two African American men driving a black, 4-door, Chevy Impala robbed victims in the 1500 block of North Wells in Old Town on Sept. 13 and again on Sept. 19 on North State Street, WGN-TV reports.
The fake Uber drivers managed to finesse the passengers out of their debit cards and PIN info, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
“These guy’s aren’t using an Uber app, they’re just happening to take advantage of people outside,” said Officer Bari Lemmon, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department, told the Chicago Tribune. “We don’t want people to think it’s unsafe to hire an Uber. Just know what car you’re getting into.”
Lemon advised Uber users to make sure the driver, the make and model of the car, and the license plate all match the car they order on the Uber app.
“Be aware of your surroundings,” Lemmon told the Tribune. “Know where you’re going and what you’re getting into and, if anything, if you’re faced with a situation like this, don’t try to fight. In any kind of robbery, if someone is asking for money, just give it to them. Don’t make yourself a further victim.”
