Offset was possibly the victim of racial profiling. The Migos rapper Offset was arrested Friday on weapon and drug charges.
Offset’s attorney, Drew Findling, told TMZ his client broke no laws, and cops used a lane change as an excuse to arrest the rapper.
“It’s a common theme,” Findling said. “We’re talking about a young, African-American man driving a shiny, beautiful luxury car and clad in designer clothes and watches and jewelry.”
He continued, “Unfortunately, people in his genre become a target for law enforcement who think that lifestyle is connected to some illegal activity … and that is a sad statement.”
Clayton police observed the “Fight Night” rapper, whose real name is Kiari Cephus, and his bodyguard, Senay Gezahgn, making an improper lane change in their 2014 Porsche 911 on Upper Riverdale Road in Jonesboro, GA, WSB-TV 2 Atlanta reports.
Police pulled the two over and conducted a search, finding three handguns, less than 1 ounce of marijuana and more than $107,000 in cash.
Offset was charged with improper lane change; possession of marijuana, less than 1 ounce; possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.
Gezahgn was charged with possession of marijuana, less than 1 ounce, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.
Findling says the guns belong to Offset’s bodyguard who is a licensed gun holder. The guns were in the car for security.
Findling says Offset needs protection because of the large amounts of cash he carries and jewelry he wears.
