A University of Alabama student and recent Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. initiate died Thursday, April 5 during a riverboat party hosted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., according University of Alabama student newspaper The Crimson White.
The body of Charles Edward Jones, III was reportedly found just before 2 p.m. Friday, Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Battalion chief Chris Williamson told The Crimson White.
Jones, a sophomore chemical engineering major, drowned in the Black Warrior River after falling over the Bama Belle riverboat.
National Pan-Hellenic Council president Xavier Burgin told The Crimson White every fraternity and sorority in NPHC sends their condolences to Jones’ family.
“Foremost, we grieve with the Eta Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi who’ve lost a friend, brother and member,” Burgin said. “We hope this instance of avoidable circumstance reminds every student at the University of Alabama to cherish those you hold dearest. Tomorrow is not promised.”
