A Chicago filmmaker had to spend a night in jail after a misunderstanding over what police believed were drugs in his vehicle, according to DNAinfo.

Joseph Gatheright, 22, was reportedly pulled over by police in a seedy neighborhood near West 78th street and asked to open his trunk.

In Gatheright’s trunk were film equipment and props for his film “The Laws of Chi-Raq.” One of the props included four bags of flour police assumed was $3 million worth of heroin.



Gatherite thought police were going to determine the white powder was not real upon examination at the police station. But Gatherite was in for a rude awakening.

“That didn’t happen at all,” he said. “It was actually terrifying.”

Gatherite was later placed on house arrest after pleading his innocence to a judge. The charges were dropped two weeks later after lab tests found the white powder to be fake.

Gatherite believes he is owed an apology for his arrest.

“I don’t really want to bash the police because they were just doing their job. …It was a really bad neighborhood.

Still, Gatherite didn’t think his treatment was fair.

“It was apparent I was a film director,” he said.
