Liane Membis called her actions that led to her firing from The Wall Street Journal and “honest mistake.” According to the Huffington Post, she may now have two mistakes on her hand.
Huffington Post removed a piece written by Membis from their website citing quotes from her sources being fabricated.
The piece “Life after Yale: Undocumented,” about a Yale Grad and undocumented immigrant, was initially written for Yale’s campus magazine The New Journal. It was later republished in the Huffington Post.
Membis’ subject was reportedly an undocumented Honduran immigrant who came to the country as an infant with her parents who were in search of “economic opportunities and social advancement.”
Membis Latina subject went under the pseudonym “Teresa Serrano” for protection.
HuffPost posted an editor’s note in place of Membis’ article which read:
This piece was removed from the Huffington Post following an independent investigation by Huffington Post editors. Sources in the original piece denied having made statements attributed to them by the author; other attributed statements in the piece could not be independently confirmed.
The New Journal is reportedly in the middle of its own investigation, according to The Atlantic Wire.
