Chicago Artist King Louie Slams XXL Magazine For ‘2013 Freshman’ List Snub

Of course, XXL Magazine’s latest “2013 Freshmen” edition was sure to cause some controversy and bruise a few egos.

Artists who have spent years perfecting their craft and generating buzz around themselves usually believe they are ahead of the pack.

Call it confidence or arrogance, but more importantly, they believe in themselves to know they deserve the throne.

Chicago artist King Louie is one such artist.

The “My Niggaz” rapper took to Twitter to blast XXL Magazine for excluding him on their list.

“On L’$ I knew I wasn’t gone make dat XXL Freshmen list #Fuckem

“It’s like da Rap Game scared of me,” he wrote.

Credited with popularizing the “drill” sound, King Louie has been very influential on the underground circuit.

King Louie describes drill music as Chicago’s sound.

“Drill music is a real drill,” he said during a BET documentary on Chicago. “Anything can be a drill. It’s a new sound. Our music.”

But all was not lost for the Windy City. Fellow Chicago native Chief Keef was honored with the number 11 spot.

Chief Keef, whose rap career was nearly marred by legal woes, can smile a little bit.

The Interscope artist made the XXL Magazine 2013 Freshman Class at the number 11 spot.

The list usually features 10 up and coming emcees that have made noise on the music scene. But many may cried foul if the Chi town native was absent from the list. XXL decided to feature 11 slots in their “2013 Freshman” issue.

No other emcee in 2012 has been more controversial than Chief Keef. Chief Keef, whose birth name is Keith Cozart, rose to infamy following his response to the death of fellow Chicago rapper Lil’ JoJo.

“hahahahahhahahahahahahahaahhAAHAHAHAHA #RichNi**aShit,” Keef wrote. “Its Sad Cuz Dat N***a Jojo Wanted To Be Jus Like Us #LMAO.”

The death of Lil’ JoJo, born Joseph Coleman, came following a highly-publicized rap beef with Chief Keef’s Glory Boyz Entertainment associates Lil’ Durk and Lil’ Reese, who are both signed to Def Jam Recordings.
