Grandmother Defends Chief Keef

Newly signed Interscope artist Chief Keef is currently being investigated for the tragic murder of 16-year-old Chicago rapper Joseph Coleman. Chief Keef’s grandmother Margaret Carter spoke with the Chicago Sun Times to downplay speculation of her grandson’s involvement in gangs and the crimes.

Carter, 63, referred to her grandson, born Keith Cozart, as a homebody. Her grandson, she said, doesn’t leave the house much, spend too much time on the Internet, play his music loud and has too many girls in his bedroom.

“How can he be doing all that gang stuff when he’s always home and when he’s not at home he’s out of town with me or his uncle. . . . And where’s this gang at? In my kitchen? In my basement? Where they at? In my refrigerator where he go all the time?” Carter told the Sun Times.
Chief Keef sent social media into an outrage after laughing at news of Coleman’s death on his Twitter account. Many speculated the tweet linked the “Don’t Like” rapper to the crime.

“Its Sad Cuz Dat N***a Jojo Wanted To Be Jus Like Us #LMAO,” he wrote.

Keef later said his account was hacked and sent his condolences to Coleman’s family.

“Man, been thinkin bout this chicago street shit a lot. My prayers go out 2 Jojo’s family on their loss,” the Interscope rapper tweeted.

Carter said her grandson comes from a good home. She doesn’t allow any tomfoolery to go on in her house.
“Look, I’m granny,” she told the Sun Times. “That’s what they call me and I didn’t grow up with none of that mess. That don’t go in my g*da*n house.”

Her grandson, she said, raps about what he sees around him in his environment and not what he does.
Chief Keef even steered his older cousins away from thug life, she added
“He says, ‘You don’t have to do what you doing,’ ” Carter said, according to the Sun Times. “And they say, ‘My little cousin pulled me out of the street.’ ”

Chief Keef was arrested on a weapons charge in December 2011 and placed under house arrest. He gained popularity for several videos shot at his grandmother’s home.

Carter believes her grandson learned a valuable lesson from the incident.

“I be on his a** all the time. I’m on his a** now,” she said. “I tell him, ‘Things will not go right if you don’t do it right.’”

Carter believes all the backlash Chief Keef has been receiving for his insensitive tweet is due to “jealousy.”

“That’s just jealousy of a little dark-skinned ugly boy and how smart he was to come up with all this,” Carter said.

Englewood resident Lil JoJo, born Joseph Coleman, was murdered in a hail of gunfire Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. just a few blocks from where he stayed. Coleman allegedly had an ongoing dispute with Chief Keef’s entourage and members of the Black Disciple street gang.

Coleman was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting as he was riding on the back pegs of a friend’s bike. Witnesses described the vehicle as a tan, older model, four-door Ford Taurus that was riding low in the back, according to the Sun Times. Coleman died minutes after being shot.

Lil’ JoJo allegedly had a hit out on him due to his highly publicized beef with the Black Disciples street gang, namely rappers Lil’ Durk and Lil’ Reese. The rapper posted a video “3HunnaK” to Youtube attacking the Glory Boyz Entertainment affiliates.

“These ni**as claim 300, but we BDK,” he rapped.

BDK is short for Black Disciples Killers and “300” is the gang numeric code for the Black Disciples gang.

Despite the violent feud, Carter isn’t worried about Keef’s safety.

“I ain’t worried. Maybe I should be but I’m not,” she told the Sun Times. “Every time he leave out that door I ask the Lord to cover him in His blood.”
