Black culture continues to make history. The Hip Hop/R&B genre has now passed the Rock genre as the most dominant genre in the U.S. for the first, according to a Nielsen Music report.
Hip Hop/R&B, classified as one genre by Nielsen, account for 25.1 percent of the music consumed in the U.S. Rock, founded in 1940s by African American musicians, accounts for 23 percent.
Hip Hop/R&B can attribute its popularity to streaming sales. Rock still holds the title when it comes to albums sales, earning 40 percent of all sales in the U.S.
Hip Hop/R&B accounts for just over 29 percent of all on-demand streams across the country. The genre is reportedly nearly as popular on streaming services than the Rock and Pop.
Seven of the top 10 most popular songs on streaming services belong to the Hip Hop/R&B genre, including Bruno Mars, Drake and The Weeknd.
