Karla Lee, mother of Tyshawn Lee, is happy about a judge not allowing bond for her son’s alleged killer Corey Morgan. Morgan, 27, was charged with first-degree murder in Tyshawn’s shooting death. Police identified 22-year-old Kevin Edwards as the second suspect. A third suspect has not been named.
“JUDGE WENT CRAZY AND I UNDERSTAND YOUR BROTHER WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM U BUT TO SHOOT A 9 YEAR OLD AND THE WAY YAL DID IT WAS SO F*CKED UP NO BOND THO JESUS WORKING THAT’S RIGHT TYSHAWN GET THEM N*GGAS OFF THE STREET,” Ms. Lee wrote on Facebook.
Karla told the Chicago Tribune she grew up with Morgan.
“The feeling? Lord Jesus, it’s like I just can’t believe it,” she told the Tribune. “The same guy I grew up with, talked with, played at the park and stuff … (is) the same one that murdered my baby.”
“This whole thing is sickening,” she said during a press conference. “…I’m so shocked about how they lured him in there. I didn’t know they was in a park multiple times. I didn’t know none of that.”
Police say Corey Morgan and two other gang members spotted Tyshawn at a park and lured him into an alley where they fatally shot him.
Police named Morgan a person of interest two days following Tyshawn’s murder and brought him in for questioning, but released him the same day.
Morgan was arrested alongside Dwight Boone-Doty Monday, Nov. 16 after they left a Hilton hotel in a vehicle. Police confiscated a .40 caliber gun with 12 live rounds and a .45 caliber gun with 14 live round during their stop. Morgan was released after posting 10 percent of his $1 million bail for the gun charge.
Police suspect Tyshawn’s murder may have been retribution for the murder of Morgan’s 25-year-old brother Tracey Morgan. Tracey was killed in a shooting incident that also left his mother wounded while they were in a vehicle. The fatal shooting occurred after Tracey and his mother left a police-sponsored “put the guns down” meeting with many of the area’s gang members in attendance.
Tyshawn, a student at Scott Joplin Elementary School, was shot several times in the upper body, including the head and back, ABC 7 Chicago reports. He was laid to rest Tuesday, Nov. 10.
