Jay-Z has jumped from the realm of Hip Hop to dive into the world of sports. The “Niggas In Paris” rapper founded Roc Nation Sports in conjunction with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to represent athletes.
Roc Sports Nation announced its signing of New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano early Tuesday. Cano is in the final season of a $57 million contract, ESPN reports.
“Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” said Jay-Z told Billboard in a statement.
Rapper Wale took to Twitter to congratulate Jay-Z on his new venture.
“#rocboys win again,” he wrote.
Cano issued a statement to ESPN stating, “At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors on and off the field. I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates.”
Roc Nation Sports isn’t Jay-Z’s first sports venture.
The rapper, born Shawn Corey Carter, owns a minority stake in the Brooklyn Nets.
Jay-Z, who has amassed a wealth of over $450 million through sound business dealings, enjoys a few perks for his association with the Nets organization. Carter reportedly has free use one of 11 “Vault” suites.
Additionally, the will contain a 40/40 Club and Rocawear store.
