Antonio Brown, father of Amari Brown who was fatally shot on the Fourth of July, is defending himself against criticism from Chicago Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the bullet that claimed the life of little Amari was meant for his father who he says is a ranking gang member.

Amari, 7, was shot while standing with his father on the sidewalk in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The boy, affectionately known as BooBoo, was shot in the right side of his chest and taken to Stroger Hospital where he later died, the Chicago Sun Times reports.

Brown reportedly told the Tribune that he thought the shots that killed his son were just fireworks. But then people started yelling, “They shot your son,” and he saw Amari collapsed on the ground, he said.

“I picked him up and put him in the car. I was in the back seat, I was talking to him the whole time. I was like, ‘You cool, I know you cool,’ ” Brown said. “Yeah, I’m cool. I’m cool,” Amari answered, according to Brown.

McCarthy held a news conference Sunday and said the system failed Amari. McCarthy said the boy’s father Antonio Brown, who has been arrested 45 times and has a lengthy criminal record, should not have been on the streets.

“If Mr. Brown is in custody, his son is alive,” McCarthy said, according to the Chicago Tribune. “That’s not the case. Quite frankly, he should’ve have been on the street.”

McCarthy said Brown was released in April after posting $5K bond on a gun charge.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel echoed McCarthy’s criticism of Brown on Monday during a press conference.

“You have a father who’s lost a child that should be cooperating with the police department, in solving the crime of their child,” the mayor said.

Police say Antonio has been uncooperative in their investigation.

Brown and his attorneys are now accusing the police chief of character assassination, and having his facts wrong, Fox 32 reports.

“You know how I was feeling? F You. F You. F You. I don’t want to talk to nobody, my son, you can’t bring him back. I can’t make another him,” Brown told Fox 32 reporters.

Brown’s attorney David Gaeger called McCarthy’s claims “inaccurate.”

“To have his character assassinated like that while the blood of his son is still on his pants is, it’s inaccurate and its too bad that it happened that way,” Gaeger said.

Brown added, “Just don’t judge me off my background and because I ain’t cooperated at the hospital. Don’t do that. That ain’t right.”

Brown called for authorities to bring his family justice when speaking with reporters.

“We gon seek justice. We gone find out who did it and we gon find out the right way,” he said. “…Like they supposed to their job. I can’t do yall job. I do yall job, I go to jail. Yall do yall job, so let’s serve justice.”
