A student group at the University of Texas is proposing a gender inclusive co-ed dorm for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender students, Fox 4 reports. The group seeks to ensure a safe haven for LGBT students to room with one another.
UT student Georgie Parker called the proposal a “viable option,” Fox 4 reports. Parker said, “A straight person living with a gay or lesbian might feel uncomfortable and vice versa.”
Hemlata Jhaveri, director of residence life, told Fox 4 the co-ed dorm proposal is “more popular on the East coast and West Coast.”
“…It’s too early to tell where we’ll be heading with this,” she said.
