Earvin “Magic” Johnson was recently honored Saturday at The Common Ground Foundation’s 3rd Annual Awards Gala & Fundraiser with an award for Global Impact.
The NBA Legend took to Twitter to praise the rapper Common for bestowing him with the honor.
“People of Chicago you missed a sold out even by @Common and the Common Ground Foundation Saturday night!
“Thank you to @common and the Common Ground Foundation for honoring me this past weekend with an award for global impact,” he wrote.
Johnson additionally praised Common for the work he is doing in Chicago’s urban community.
“Congratulations to @Common for the great work he’s doing with the youth and urban communities in the city of Chicago,” he wrote.
The Common Ground Foundation was founded by Hip Hop entertainer Common to give back to the youth in the community.
Common, born Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr., wrote he started his foundation simply because he wanted to “help people help themselves,” according to the CGF’s website.
“I always believed that if we started with the youth then we would be planting the seeds for our future to blossom,” he wrote. “Give the children a sense of hope, self-esteem, and love that will better the world…I think making a difference in the lives of others is life’s greatest purpose. I walk this path with faith knowing that the Common Ground Foundation will Change the World.”
CGF was honored by CNN Heroes (2011) and BET Hip Hop Awards (2010) for its philanthropic work in urban communities.
