Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., founded on Nov. 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, IN, is celebrating 89 years. It was founded by seven educators, which includes Mary Lou Allison Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Downey Martin and Cubena McClure.
The sorority- one of only four historically represented African American sororities to be founded on a predominantly white campus- boasts over 85,000 members with more than 500 undergraduate and alumnae chapters over the world. A non-profit service and social organization, the sorority’s aims are to enhance the quality of life within the community through programs and activities that promote public service, leadership development and education of youth.
Committed to principles of scholarship, sisterhood and service, Sigma Gamma Rho implements numerous programs in the community. The sorority offers OPERATION BigBookbag, a program that aims to address the needs of at-risk school-aged children.The sorority has also partnered with RE/MAX Supreme Properties, Inc. to provide educational scholarships while promoting homeownership.
