Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently paid homage to late member Rev. Addie L. Wyatt, the first female board member of the United Packinghouse Food and Alliance Workers Union and first African-Americans woman to become a labor leader of a major international union.
Wyatt passed away Wednesday, March 28 at Advocate Trinity Hospital in Chicago from an undisclosed illness. She was 88.
Wyatt’s accomplishments include: Time Magazine, Women of the Year, 1975; University of Michigan, International Women’s Year Award; Ebony magazine, 100 moat influential Black Americans; and International Civil Rights Walk of Fame inductee, 2005.
“The members of Delta Sigma Theta are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear soror Rev. Addie L. Wyatt,” said Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre, National President of Delta Sigma Theta in a statement. “She was a stalwart advocate for the rights of women, African-Americans any person treated unfairly in their workplace. We join her family, friends, colleagues and those whose lives she undoubtedly touched in mourning the loss of such a phenomenal woman.”
