Powerful military-grade assault rifles are now on the streets of Chicago.

Thieves allegedly stole 13 semi-automatic assault rifles from a freight train container in Englewood, Chicago, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

The weapons were taken from a rail yard near 61st Street and Lafayette Avenue, according to NBC Chicago.

The weapons taken were reportedly part of a 50-order shipment of Smith and Wesson M&P sport rifles on its way to a licensed gun dealer in Minnesota, ABC 7 reports. The weapons are equipped with 30-round magazines, according to NBC Chicago.

The stolen weapons have triggered an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assault rifles have been used in violent shootings in Chicago in the past. A gunman equipped with a military-grade assault rifle sparked mayhem Sept. 19, 2013 during a peaceful outing at a local park on the South Side.

The gunman fired 16 bullets from his weapons at community residents assembled at Cornell Square Park.

One of the victims included three-year-old Deonta Howard who was shot in the head.

Howard luckily survived the shooting after the bullet entered his ear and exited his mouth, CNN reports.



Two teenagers, a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, were also shot.



The shooting drew anger from Lil Reese who took to twitter to rebuke the shooting.

“Lame ass fake ass gangbanger shootin kids smh ho ass niggaz,” he wrote.



Chicago has long been plagued by gun violence earning the city the nickname “Chiraq.” There are currently 109 homicides reported this year.
