Four teens have been charged in the Sept. 28 killing of Maxwell Gadau and shooting of a 17-year-old girl who currently remains hospitalized, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Dzevad Avdic, 19; Myles Hughes, 19; Jeremy Ly, 19; and Nicholas Smith, 19; were charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and armed robbery, according to CBS Chicago. Ly, Hughes and Smith were ordered held without bail Sunday in Cook County Bond Court. Avdic will appear in court Monday.
Prosecutors say the deadly incident resulted from a botched robbery attempt in a marijuana drug deal.
Two of the suspects, Avdic and Ly, were friends with Gadau. The slain teen’s father Peter Gadau said one of the suspects served as a mentor to his son on the swim team at Niles North High School.
“When they were on the swim team together, this individual was a couple of years older than my son, very much a mentor to Max,” he told ABC 7 Chicago. “To think that somehow this individual was involved in the murder of my son is devastating.”
Max’s mother Patricia Gadau told the Tribune she felt betrayed.
“I feel betrayed,” she said. “It’s sad because I know their parents raised them here in Skokie to protect them from what we’ve been exposed to.”
Rumors surfaced throughout social media Gadau alleging was murdered for claiming GDK, an acronym for Gangster Disciple Killer.
Gadau was a huge fan of popular Def Jam recording artist Lil Durk. He took a photo with the “Hell In My City” rapper before his untimely demise.
“Can anyone even explain this,” the caption on his post read.
Durk learned of Gadau’s death and expressed his condolences.
Durk posted the image of himself and Gadau with a caption, reading, “Rest in peace to one of my fans that just got killed my condolence goes out to his family.”
Many fans of Chiraq Hip Hop have come to adopt the gang affiliated hand signs and lingo of their favorite artists. Lil Bugg, for instance, grew in popularity after mimicking his favorite rapper Chief Keef in online video posts.
