It has been two years since RondoNumbaNine was charged with the Feb. 22, 2014 shooting death of cab driver Javan Boyd. Rondo, who is currently in Cook County, opted for a speedy trial.
Rondo’s attorney, David Hill, told the Chicago Tribune in a phone interview his client has been demanding trial for more than four months.
Prosecutors are worried their case may be in trouble due to the lack of cooperation of witnesses, according to the Chicago Tribune. Prosecutors say this is often an issue in cases that involved “gang slayings.”
Prosecutors say one eyewitness, also a rapper, “allegedly tore up a subpoena when investigators finally found him before fleeing to Atlanta days later.”
A female witness had evaded authorities numerous times since 2014 until she was eventually arrested Feb. 9 on an unrelated traffic warrant while hiding under a bed in a South Side home.
The woman told investigators she was in one of three vehicles that Rondo, Cdai and others rode in the night of Boyd’s killing. She also stated she returned to the crime scene with Cdai after learning he dropped his cellphone during the shooting.
She gave video statement to police and later testified in front of a grand jury.
Rondo, 19, and an unnamed accomplice allegedly fired their handguns into Boyd’s vehicle as he was waiting for a passenger, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Boyd was reportedly shot seven times in all, including, twice in the back and three times in the leg.
Boyd left behind a fiancé and an 11-year-old daughter.
The shooting was reportedly in retaliation for a fight that occurred earlier that day. A portion of the crime was caught on surveillance camera, according to the Sun-Times.
Rondo’s fingerprints were additionally found on the cab, according to the Tribune.
Messages surfaced on Rondo’s account stating the rapper would be coming home.
RondoNumbaNine is alleged to be gaining his freedom in less than a month after a mysterious message appeared on his Twitter account.
“9 Will Be Home In Less Than A Month FreeRondonumbanine,” the post on his Twitter account read.
Another message on Nine’s account read that the Team600 rapper is prepping his “Real N*gga 4 Life” tour.
