Chicago Rapper Lil’ Durk Slams Violence, Tells Kids To Get An Education

Def Jam artist Lil’ Durk took to social media to express outrage at the shooting death of 6-month old baby Jonylah Watkins in Chicago.

Watkins was shot as she was getting her diaper changed by her father Jonathan Watkins, who, too, was shot.

Jonylah was shot five times in the lung, liver, leg, shoulder, and bowel, The Chicago Tribune reports.

Baby Watkins died Tuesday from her injuries at 1 p.m. in Corner Children’s Hospital, according to CNN.

Lil Durk, who is a proud father of a baby girl himself, wrote, “killing babies go against every street code” on his instagram account along with a photo of little Jonylah Watkins.

“#repost this s--- crazy Lil N----- go around shooting vans up that all look alike …not knowing its a baby in there …you Lil mfers that thirsty for a name if you really want a name N----- graduate from high school go to college get a degree make something of yourself make your family proud.

“…killing babies go against every street code you N----- out here tweaking str8 up for a lol street cred so the guys can call you a shooter ….y’all not savages for shooting a baby you just dumb with no aim #fuckboyz,” he wrote.

Fellow Chicago Rapper Edai also recently took to Twitter to relay a message to teens that have thoughts of venturing away from the porch. Edai wanted teens to place a primary focus on education.

“If u go to school …stay in School and Out The Streets……#realtweet,” he wrote.

The “So Serious” rapper then went on to slam gun violence.

“Stop The Violence …. Don’t Shoot I Wanna Grow Up ##rns,” he wrote.

Gun violence has plagued the city of Chicago for many years. Many residents have renamed the Windy City “Chiraq” for its high rate of violence. Chicago, according to statistics, has a higher homicide rate than Kabul, Afghanistan.

In 2012 alone, the city recorded 506 murders.

The beginning of 2013 didn’t show any slowdown in pace. Chicago saw its deadliest January since 2002 with 45 homicides reported, according to CBS.

NBC Chicago estimated the Windy City is on pace to reach 730 homicides this year.

In Chicago, the homicide rate is disproportionately higher amongst its minority residents. There have been 2,045 homicides since Jan. 1, 2007 amongst the African American demographic, according to Red Eye Chicago. There were 647 homicides amongst Caucasians since 2007.

The death of Little Jonylah is demoralizing given the dramatic drop in the homicide rate in February.

14 homicides were reported in February, the lowest since 1957, according to a Chicago Police Department report.

The gunman in Jonylah’s case is still at-large. Surveillance footage captured the gunman fleeing the scene in a blue van.
