Tyshawn Lee, 9, was the City’s latest young victim of violence. Tyshawn, a student at Scott Joplin Elementary School, was shot several times in the upper body, including the head and back, ABC 7 Chicago reports. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Tyshawn’s grandmother, Bertha Lee, found his body lying in a pool of blood with his basketball next to him.

Tyshawn Lee’s home-going service was held Tuesday afternoon at St. Sabina church in South Side Chicago. Hundreds of community residents were in attendance to say their farewells to the 9-year-old boy who was gunned down in an alley in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood last Monday afternoon. Among those who attended the service was Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and actor Nick Cannon.

Father Michael Pfleger gave a moving speech to his congregation.

“Our children deserve to walk the streets,” he said, according NBC Chicago. “Tyshawn was not in the wrong place, the murderer, the assassin was in the wrong place. We must find the killer of Tyshawn.”
