Lil Wayne Reveals He Wasn’t Sure About Signing Drake

Lil Wayne has been instrumental in building powerhouse brands such as CashMoney, Squad Up and Young Money. Weezy can credit his knack for finding new talent and being a trendsetter in the game.

But Weezy revealed during a radio interview with Wild Wayne of Q93 he almost passed up on one his biggest signees to date- Drake.

“Drizzy is interesting. They had to sell Drizzy on me,” Weezy said. “I heard Drizzy way more than I needed to hear Nicki. I heard Drizzy, I was like ‘I don’t know.’ Like ‘What is this?’ Truthfully, when I seen him I was like ‘I don’t know.’ I’m like ‘I’m not sure.’ What I mean by that is it was so honest. The music was so honest. We as listeners, we weren’t used to that yet.

Wayne says rap has always been about “persona” citing artists like Fat Boys, Run DMC, Kool Moe Dee, Jay Z, Puffy and Biggie.

But Drake, he said, was “honest.”

“We never heard rap be honest like that,” he said. “When it was honest like that, it would be coming from a Common. What I mean is that we expect that from him.

“When I heard Drizzy and it was honest music, it was still talking about the things I can relate to,” he continued. “…It was something about I love and it was like you cannot like it. …And then the moment I heard him sing… I was like ‘Who is that on this part… this person can really sing.’ They was like ‘That’s him too.’ I was like ‘Okay, print him up a contract. Let’s go.’”
