Odd Future’s Other Gay Member: Syd the Kid

Frank Ocean isn’t the only artist from Los Angeles-based alternative Hip Hop group Odd Future to reveal he is a homosexual.

Female rapper Syd the Kid has been out and proud to the public ever since she debuted her controversial music video for her song “The Internet- Cocaine.”

Syd told L.A. Weekly she made the video because she wished she had an openly gay female artist to look up to when she was growing up.

“People write on my Tumblr just thanking me for making the video, saying that I really inspire them, and they want to be like me,” she said. “But I wasn’t always this way, this comfortable with myself, and I remember what that was like. So I figure, fuck it. Everyday people aren’t given this opportunity and I realize that. And I didn’t at first. I thought I was just lucky to be along for the ride.”

Though she’s not shy about her sexuality, Syd revealed to L.A. Weekly she’s not a fan of the term “lesbian.”

“I hate the word ‘lesbian.’ Or ‘p**sy.’ Or even like, ‘thespian,’” she sais. “They’re just awkward words! If you know me you might hear me say the word ‘gay,’ or something. I’d much rather say gay than lesbian. Not only that, but I don’t know if I’d kick it with a group of lesbians anyway.”

Syd the Kid wishes more artists would come out the closet.

“There’s Alicia Keys, who’s married to Swizz Beatz – we know that s**t ain’t real,” she told L.A. Weekly. “You got Queen Latifah kissing Common in movies. Missy Elliott saying she don’t wanna hang with b**ches. You know she loves her some b**ches.”

Frank Ocean and Syd the Kid are perhaps leading a new renaissance of artists in the Hip Hop and R&B community. They should be applauded for their bravery in not being shy about their sexual orientation
