Gun violence over the Fourth of July weekend in Chicago has left 10 people dead and 54 people wounded, according to Chicago Tribune.
Among the city’s weekend fatalities was 7-year-old Amari Brown who was shot while standing with his father on the sidewalk in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
The boy, affectionately known as BooBoo, was shot in the right side of his chest and taken to Stroger Hospital where he later died, the Chicago Sun Times reports.
A 17-year-old boy was shot to death Friday in a Bronzeville neighborhood park named after slain King College Prep student Hadiyah Pendleton. The teen, identified as Vonzell Banks, was playing basketball when someone in a vehicle pulled up and opened fire, according to the Chicago Sun Times.
Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy blamed Chicago’s gun violence on the justice system.
“We need to repair a broken system. Criminals don’t feel the repercussions of the justice system,” McCarthy said.
The number of victims from gun violence is down from last year’s Fourth of July Weekend. In 2014, there were 82 people shot and 18 people killed.
