Alpha Phi Alpha Supports North Carolina Man Claiming Racism

Johnathan Wall

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is supporting a young man who is alleging racism against a local sports bar in Raleigh, NC.

Johnathan Wall, a Raleigh native, claims a bartender at a downtown Raleigh sports bar put him in a chokehold and threw him out, NBC 17 reports.

A protest called the “Above it All” rally was held in Moore Square for Wall who believes the bartender’s actions were motivated by race. The bar and its lawyer vehemently deny the allegations, NBC 17 reports.

The bar insists Wall was asked to leave because he wasn’t a member or guest of the club.

“This isn’t about me and it’s not just about Downtown Sports Bar, it’s not just about Raleigh or North Carolina, this is a problem that’s facing our nation,” Wall said.

The rally attracted local Raleigh natives, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and city council member Eugene Weeks.

Carl Pickney, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. told NBC 17 negative stereotypes may have played a role in Wall’s treatment.

“Negative stereotypes, as it relates to African American males, has been so much of a negativity from the standpoint of even how we’re approached or viewed,” Pickney said. “And we try to promote a positive male role model.”
