The Florida judge who needed more time to decide on a ruling in Zimmerman’s bond hearing has set the neighborhood watchman’s bail at $1 million, USA Today reports.
Zimmerman’s initial $150,000 bond was revoked for lying about his finances and failing to disclose a second passport. Lester’s decision to free Zimmerman comes as a surprise to many who feel the neighborhood watchman should remain in jail for lying.
Zimmerman, who reportedly has more than $200, 000 in account balance, will easily pay the 10% to put a $1 million bond.
In his ruling, Lester wrote, “Under any definition, the defendant has flaunted the system. Counsel has attempted to portray the defendant as being a confused young man who was fearful and experienced a moment of weakness and who may have also have acted out of a sense of ‘betrayal’ by the system. Based upon all the evidence presented, this court finds the opposite. The defendant tried to manipulate the system when he has been presented the opportunity to do so.”
Zimmerman’s wife was charged with perjury over the lie, but was released on $1000 bail.
Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder after killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26. Zimmerman has maintained his actions were in sefl-defense.
