Lil Bibby Reminisces About Shootouts On 78th and Essex

Lil Bibby hails from 78th and Essex, an area also known as Terror Town. Bibby witnessed a lot of terror in his neighborhood. Bibby took BET on a tour through his neighborhood.

Bibby recalled 78th and Essex as a block where him and his guys did “a lot of stuff.”

“Like when we was getting older, we start moving to this block,” Bibby said. “We did like a lot of extreme stuff. This is like teenage years. This block shaped everything. Shaped all the music, me as a person. I seen homeboys get killed on this block, drug raids… I remember it was a time where we was at war. Heavy like a heavy, heavy war. Most of my homeboys didn’t come outside during this war. It was like me and like two of my homies outside. I was always out. I needed the money.”

Bibby said he had rely on gangways to survive the shootouts.

“This is my favorite block because it’s all type of gang ways where you can just – somebody start shooting at you or police come – you can just run through there. My house was right there, so I would run through there and dip through the back of the house. Like when we was at war, it was me and one of my homies, I used to be right there with all my weed, he used to be in the cut with the guns and stuff on him cause people used to come through shooting at us everyday. This block, words can’t even explain. I think Chicago is one of the realest places. I think it kinda forces people to grow up at a young age. It’s a dark cloud over the city.”
