Mississippi Highway Shooter Arrested

Highway Shooter Suspect James D. Willie

Authorities have arrested a suspect behind two murders on a Mississippi highway, The Associated Press reports.

James D. Willie, 28, was arrested earlier today and charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and rape. He reportedly will be formally charged with two counts of capital murder.

Investigators initially thought the suspect impersonated a police officer and murdered his victims after pulling them over.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain told the Associated Press those suspicions were founded to be untrue.

Thomas Schlender, 74, and Lori Anne Carswell, 48, were found dead on a Mississippi highway on May 8 and May 11, respectively.

The suspect was arrested after police responded to a domestic dispute, according to news release obtained by AP. Police found a 9mm Ruger in his possession during his arrest. Authorities then ran ballistic testing on the weapon and discovered it was the same weapon used in the highway slayings.

Motive behind the shootings are unknown. Police are currently investigating the matter.
