A freshman at Fresno State University died from severe brain damage after a night of drinking at an off-campus fraternity house, the Associated Press reports.
Authorities are investigating whether 18-year-old Philip Dhanens succumbed from a hazing ritual conducted by Theta Chi fraternity. Dhanens was pledging the fraternity before his untimely demise, university spokeswoman Shirley Armbruster said, according to the AP.
The fraternity has been suspended as authorities investigate Dhanens’ death.
“We are heartbroken at the loss of this young man who had just joined our university community and had a life of promise ahead,” the university’s president, John D. Welty, said in a statement.
Dhanen’s parents are keeping their son on life support, so they may donate his organs.
