An old video has resurfaced showing a young Barack Obama leading a protest at Harvard University. The video dated back to 1991 shows Obama speaking in support of Harvard’s first tenured black law professor Derrick Bell.
“I remember that the black law student that organized an orientation for the first year students and one of the person who spoke at the orientation was professor Bell,” Obama said. “And I remember him sauntering up to the front and not giving us a lecture but engaging us in a conversation and speaking the truth.”
Obama helped rally fellow students in support of Bell, who was protesting the lack of African American female professors at the Ivy League school. At the time, he took an unpaid leave until Harvard hired a woman of color.
In the video, the young Obama displays his signature wit and charm praising Bell for the “excellence of his scholarship,” in addition to remarking on the professor’s “good looks” and “easy charm.”
Obama further acknowledge Bell’s contribution by saying his “scholarship has opened up new vistas and new horizons.”
Obama asked the onlookers to “open up your hearts and your minds to the words of Professor Bell.”
