A Chicago teen was shot and killed this past weekend after an apparent robbery attempt over his sneakers.
Sergio Pinex, 18, recently moved to Gary, IN from Chicago after finding a new job, his family said. He was walking down the street with a friend when men in a white Cadillac and purple PT Cruiser approached them. A man with a gun got out his vehicle and approached the two and demanded money and their sneakers.
Pinex’s friend followed the suspect’s order, but he refused. Frances Pinex, Serigo’s grandmother, said her grandson “refused to get down when they told him to get down.”
Frances Pinex still has a hard time grappling with her grandson’s death.
“It’s so hard, so hard to believe that he’s gone,” she said.
