Gabrielle Douglas appeared in a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter to discuss the controversy surrounding her hair.
Douglas discovered the controversy after logging onto her computer and searching her name. She was shocked after discovering social media’s fixation on her hair rather than gold medal performance. Douglas told Oprah she saw debate surrounding her hair in mentions on Twitter.
“I looked at my mentions and there was like ‘don’t talk about Gabby’s Douglas hair, I love her hair’ or ‘Gabby Douglas, you are pretty the way you are, don’t listen to all of this negative,’ and I’m like what are they talking about,” she told Oprah.
Douglas told Oprah she then went to Google learn more about the hair controversy. Douglas said the first search result was about “Gabby Douglas hair.”
“I’m like what are all these people talking about,” she said. “I was so confused, but I didn’t want to focus on the negative.”
Douglas admitted the backlash she received from the African American community “hurt.”
