JSU Alpha Phi Alpha & Hazing Victim Agree To Mediation

Two parties involved in a hazing incident at Jacksonville State University have agreed to settle matters outside the courtroom, according to the Washington Post.

Members from the University’s Alpha Phi Alpha chapter and hazing victim Jason Horton will have 30 days from Friday to agree on a mediator and another 30 days after their selection to set up the mediation, Horton’s attorney Michael Petway told the Anniston Star.

In 2011, the black and gold fraternity at the university was under fire for alleged acts of hazing that left a pledge in the hospital for 24 days.

Former pledge Jason Horton filed a lawsuit alleging he was a victim of a number of hazing activities that included consuming large quantities of alcohol, being struck by eggs and being beaten for long periods of time with fists and paddles.

Horton’s liver, the complaint said, was enlarged and functioning at 50 percent, according to The Anniston Star. He was bleeding internally and his urine was black.

Before heading to hospital, Horton reportedly vomited blood. Members of the fraternity attempted to keep Horton from seeking medical attention by telling him it was tomato sauce he vomited.

The chapter has since been suspended from the campus.
