Wyclef Jean Says Young Thug Reminds Him Of Tupac

Young Thug is today’s Tupac? Wyclef Jean seems to think so.

Wyclef praised Thugger during an interview with Pigeons and Planes, calling “Harambe” rapper a “revolutionary.”

Clef made a guest appearance on Thug’s “Jeffery” mixtape in song “Kanye West.” Thugger, who referred to Wyclef as one of his “greatest inspirations,” paid homage to him by titling the project’s opening track after his name.

“He’s from a project, I’m from a similar background,” Wylef told Pigeons and Planes. “And he has a natural love for Haiti, understanding the history of Haiti. Haiti is the first black republic. He reminded me of a modern Tupac, in a sense—in a revolutionary sense. I mean that by, alright, you might see a thug, but his connection to history seemed similar to what Pac understood, of like, ‘This is who the Black Panthers are. Read this book, read that book.’ This kid understands. I sent him the Ghosts of Cité Soleil documentary. He must have seen it like 10, 15 times. He is like a sponge when it comes to history. He likes to absorb a lot of information, and actually wants to learn.”

Many people may beg to differ on the Tupac comparisons.

Thugger caught heat in 2014 after declining to offer any comments on the police shooting of Mike Brown during a red carpet interview with Bossip at the BET awards.

“Leave that up with the critics and the laws,” he said. “We having fun, we iced out. We having money, that’s how we doing it.”

He then said it’s not in an artist’s place to speak on social issues.
