Paul Ryan’s African American College Sweetheart Speaks Out

Paul Ryan and his African-American college sweetheart Deneeta Pope met when they were college students at Miami University at Oxford.

Pope, 40, spoke exclusively to the Daily Mail and had nothing, but kind words for the GOP’s vice presidential candidate.

“Paul is a very nice guy, a kind guy and a family guy,” said Pope who met Ryan as a member of the university’s cheerleading squad. “He’s very approachable and a very likeable person.”

Ryan told Milwaukee Magazine his college sweetheart was a black woman.

“I have a sister-in-law who’s African-American. My college sweetheart was black,” he said. “I just experienced some ugly comments; some racist views from people who I thought were friends of mine.”

Pope, however, denied she and Ryan experienced any forms of racism while dating.

Though the relationship ended shortly after Ryan moved to Washington, D.C., the two remained good friends. Pope told Daily Mail Ryan and his wife came to Chicago as guests in her wedding.

Pope, who is a registered Democrat, once donated $2,000 to Ryan when he was campaigning for Congress in 2008. But she also made three contributions to the Barack Obama campaign fund totaling $972.

“I am indeed a Democrat. That’s no secret. But although I have a different political association to Paul, I support him and wish him continued success.”
